I always have been intrigued by Frida Kahlo. She was wild, she was brash, she was strong, she was an artistic genius, she defied stereotypes of beauty and pretty much did what she damned well pleased. Tragedy, pain, loss, a tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera and she still pushed on and created her own world both artistically and earthly. She had her own style and was not apologetic, she was herself. SHE WAS HERSELF. How many of us can truely say that? We are pushed by family, friends, culture, media, stereotypes etc to be something "other" from an early age. I think the focus should be on swimming against the stream, exploring and to quote Joseph Campbell, "find your bliss" and not measuring the yardstick of others expectations of you. Be yourself and the rest of the world will slowly come in line.
Love her or hate her, there is wisdom in Frida's words and paintings. Both can be soothing and uncomfortable and sometimes at both at the same time. Such is Life.
“I am not sick… I am broken.” ~ Frida Kahlo
“I drank to drown my sorrows, but the bastards learnt how to swim.” ~ Frida Kahlo
“I never paint dreams or nightmares; I paint my own reality.” ~ Frida Kahlo
“Nothing is absolute. Everything changes, everything moves, everything revolves, everything flies and goes away.”
~ Frida Kahlo
“At the end of the day we can endure much more than we think we can.” ~ Frida Kahlo
“I hope the exit is joyful and I hope never to return.” ~ Frida Kahlo
