Sitting with Silence

In our busy, hurly-burly world we are often afraid to just sit and be. The thought can be frightening to some. We have to be alone with ourselves. Conversations with Silence by Sally Longley is a rather timely book. She explores various traditions and how these traditions use silence as a contemplative way to be near and experience God and ourselves. Each chapter relays an experience she has had and a tradition to explore with reflections and further engagement information if you so wish. The reader is invited to try the various ways of silence or go deep into their own experiences and discover when God was near.

This is an excellent starter book if you have ever wanted to dive into and add silence to your practice. There is more than one path to explore, and I suggest reading a chapter at a time, trying the method explained and see what resonates with you. The various traditions presented are steppingstones and useful tools to guide one. Silence and stillness are its own language and that is the language of God. Enjoy the Silence.
