So Ingrid Bergman would have been 100 years old today. She was born on today's date and died on today's date....connections....she is one of my faves from classic Hollywood with her seemingly effortless natural acting ability. Plus, I have always been intrigued by those who were born and die on the same date, what are the chances? That is literally coming full circle.
As a child i never understood the so-called controversy when she went with Rossellini. I just did not get how people turned her backs on her. It wasn't til I got older that I realized that they were taking the images she portrayed on screen and transposing them onto her. #1 that is the mark of a good actor, #2 that is kinda shitty of an audience, #3 that is Puritanical/Conservative Americanism for you.
Screen and telly don't equal real life, it's a brief escape from it. An actors job is to inhabit and personify a character, to bring their unique talents and skills to give life and meaning to role. Some actors can do that so well, that the audience lives and breathes thinking that that actor is that portrayal. To me, that is doing a damn fine job if you can make me believe and follow you to the end the of a film or show. I think the only danger is an actor trying to become a character in real life. Cary Grant spent his whole life trying to be Cary Grant instead of just being Archie Leach. He is an all time fave of mine too. I absolutely adored him as a child and my fave movie is still the first one I saw, Father Goose.
One of my fave stories about this actor vs charactor conundrum was told by the actress Lena Headey, who is also a fave. She was saying how at Conventions the fans of Game of Thrones don't want the autograph or photo ops with her opting instead to go see other cast members. Some of them telling herthat she is their leasst favourite, just evil and a bitch. Yes, the character she portrays is, but not the actor. She remarked that she took no offense because it just proved that she was doing her job and doing it well. I say, sign me up for the autograph and photo op!!!!
Anyway, I forget where I was going with all this other than, HAPPY 100th! She lived an amazing life, was an amazing talent and a person who lived hundreds of lives via acting. I read somewhere that her daughter Isabella debuted a docu about her mother at Cannes. I would love to see that.
