So a few weekends ago I drove up to Cincinnati for a whirlwind weekend. I had the opportunity to see the Cincinnati Ballet's The New Kaplan Works Series. Taken from the site:
September 11-19 Choreography: Ma Cong, Adam Hougland, Viktor Plotnikov, Gabriel Gaffney Smith Dancing outside of the box The Kaplan New Works Series returns to be performed, for the second time in its new home at the Aronoff Center in the beautiful Jarson-Kaplan Theater, allowing access to a larger audience while maintaining the intimate environment you have grown to know and love during this series. New Works remains committed to innovation and the celebration of choreographers while showcasing the dancers and spotlighting their strength, athleticism and diversity. This year New Works features three world premieres and one Cincinnati premiere. Resident Choreographer Adam Hougland presents two works this year, introducing a brand new solo piece, which marks his sixth world premiere for Cincinnati Ballet, and the return of All My Favorite People from Cincinnati Ballet & Over the Rhine Live. Dancer turned Choreographer Viktor Plotnikov presents a world premiere piece using video technology to discover a visual union of movement and projection. He has danced featured roles in extensive classical and contemporary ballets by many acclaimed choreographers and has toured extensively in Russia and the U.S. As a choreographer, he has created a multitude of original works for several world class organizations and international ballet competitions. Ma Cong, Resident Choreographer at Tulsa Ballet, began his training with the Beijing Dance Academy and has danced the work of all the acclaimed choreographers today such as Balanchine, Forsythe, Kylián, McMillan and more. Renaissance man Gabriel Gaffney Smith, a composer and choreographer/dancer with BalletMet Columbus, presents the Cincinnati premiere, a pas de deux set to his own original musical composition.
Needless to say is was amazing!!!! I had seen the Over the Rhine set when the band, Over the Rhine played live on stage and the ballet performed. My fave was the first set. In that set they took and paired video, guerrilla style camera and modern dance into a performance art piece. It just beautiful integrated these different forms of expression and fused them into one. Just beaufifully done.
I have no background in dance, nor do I know much about it. I do however, enjoy the arts and live performances and have been to ballets and the theater on numerous occasions. You just can't beat it. Anyway, if you get a chance, go see the Cincinnati Ballet. They always put on a good show. It really is poety in motion.
My main reason for going to Cincinnati was to go to Cincy Con. Eve Myles from Dr Who, Torchwood, Broadchurch was coming. I was first in line for photo ops and you bet your ass I stood there for 30mins waiting LOL There was only 8 -10 of us, but I was first LOL Anyway, Eve was very sweet. She saw that my tag was out on my tee shirt and tucked it back in. LOL I also waited in line for her autograph, which I don't normally do as I would rather have a pic but my reasoning is that it would match with my Alex Kingston/River Song autograph that my cousin Gabe got me when he went to DC's con. So she asked my name and I told her and she was like "-y or -ey." I said, "-ie the parents had to be different. But everyone calls me Boo,so that might be easier." So she signed to : Miss Boo LOL She was a incredibly delightful, cheeky and fun person. It was a pleasure meeting her.
It was a whirlwind day, but I throughly enjoyed that Saturday. It made last weekend dull lol probably because I had nothing to do lol
